PRAGUE – More than 160 countries across the globe will commemorate Labor Day tomorrow, honoring workers who are widely regarded as the backbone of every nation.

Both the Philippines and the Czech Republic join in this annual observance, with May 1 officially declared a national holiday in recognition of the vital contributions of their labor force.

Why May 1 Matters?

Labor (British Engl: Labour) Day as a powerful reminder of the achievements, sacrifices, and ongoing struggles of workers around the world. Rooted in the labor movement of the late 19th century, the day underscores the fight for fair wages, humane working hours, and safer working conditions.

Today, it not only recognizes past victories but also highlights current challenges facing workers, from job insecurity and wage gaps to the rise of automation and contract-based employment.

Labor Day in the Philippines

In the Philippines, Labor Day is often marked by large rallies and demonstrations led by workers’ unions and advocacy groups. From calls to end contractualization to demands for wage increases, the day serves as a platform for workers to voice long-standing concerns.

Government agencies may also use the occasion to announce wage adjustments or employment programs, recognizing the essential role of Filipino workers both at home and abroad, especially Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), who are often hailed as modern-day heroes.

Labor Day in the Czech Republic

Meanwhile, in the Czech Republic, May 1 carries a dual identity. While it is officially Labor Day and rooted in the country’s socialist past, it is also celebrated as Lovers’ Day, a springtime tradition where couples kiss under blooming cherry trees.

Though the day’s political edge has softened since the end of communist rule, labor unions and left-leaning groups still use the occasion to promote workers’ rights and social solidarity through smaller events and public speeches.
